TRACK INFORMATION
DADDY ROLLIN’ STONE – Written by Otis Blackwell (‘Return To Sender’, ‘All Shook Up’, ‘Don’t be Cruel’, ‘Great Balls Of Fire’) it was one of the cover songs the New York Dolls’ had performed live. Although Johnny thunderised this Northern Soul gem, this dynamic version, mixed in 1978 by Steve Lilywhite, was left shelved when Johnny later re-recorded it with Steve Marriott, Phil Lynott, Steve Jones and Paul Cook (from the Sex Pistols).
LONDON BOYS – Written by the Heartbreakers, this run-through rocks & rolls at a fiercely break-neck tempo. It was left shelved with just a guide vocal when Johnny also later re-recorded it with Steve Jones and Paul Cook (from the Sex Pistols) for his ‘SO ALONE’ album.
NEW YORK – Written by Johnny with a riff inspired by Willie Dixon’s ‘Spoonful’ the trio taped a complete run through as Johnny’s extemporised guide vocal sketched his lyric idea. Left abandoned until now, this track offers both a rare insight into the recording process that led to the ‘SO ALONE’ album as well as a unique glimpse into a new blues-ier direction which at the time Johnny had hoped to pursue for his aborted follow-up album.
HURTIN’ – 17 year old guitarist Henri-Paul had joined the sessions (appearing on ‘DADDY ROLLIN’ STONE’ and ‘LONDON BOYS’ on this EP) and played one of his own songs to Johnny, who made a few tweaks and re-christened it ‘Hurtin’’, which was released as a single b-side. This is an alternative full length version that was mixed in 1978 by Steve Lillywhite and is previously unreleased.
BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Another remarquably special BLACK FRIDAY release via RECORD STORE DAY follows REMARQUABLE RECORDS debut release on BLACK FRIDAY 2014.
Cult guitar hero JOHNNY THUNDERS was a founding member of two highly influential groups: the fabulous, peerless NEW YORK DOLLS and punk pioneers THE HEARTBREAKERS. By 1978 Johnny was living in London, forging plans for a solo career which culminated in the release of his career-peak album ‘SO ALONE’.
Remarquable’s new DADDY ROLLIN’ STONE EP continues Remarquable Records’ ‘JOHNNY THUNDERS : 1978’ series of releases featuring previously unreleased studio recordings backed by THIN LIZZY frontman PHIL LYNOTT (bass) and THE ONLY ONES’ MIKE KELLIE (drums) and co-produced with STEVE LILLYWHITE. 37 years after these recordings were captured on tape they glow with an iridescent fluorescence, perfectly capturing a moment when Johnny was fully engaged with what he did best.
This Remarquable 10” is released on Black Friday on sherbet yellow coloured vinyl as a strictly limited edition in a special colour picture bag with previously unpublished colour photographs of Johnny in 1978 and includes a 4-page fold out colour poster with additional photos of Johnny with Phil Lynott, Mike Kellie & Henri-Paul taken in the studio during the sessions that produced the music on this EP.
